Basic Concepts of Telugu script Achulu – Vowels Hallulu – Consonants Guninthalu – Combinations of consonants with the vowel sounds All the vowels have corresponding symbols called mathralu which represent the sound of the achu.
When these mathralu are combined with a consonant, the guninantham for that consonant is made. This implies that achulu have no guninathalu and every consonant generates its own guninantham. Since Telugu is syllabic in its script, guninthalu form the building blocks of the words in combination with other vowels. Vathulu – a symbol to represent the half sound of a consonant All consonants have a corresponding vathu. Vowels don’t generate any vathulu, they only generate mathralu. A vathu of one consonant can be used in combination with itself (called dvithvaksharalu) or with another consonant. Vathulu are only ever used in a word in combination with another consonant, usually written below the full consonant.
